Why the Monthly Budget

Income, spending, and assets in one place — no more hopping between a budgeting app and a net-worth sheet
Clear income and expense categories, with ready-made options for rent, food, subscriptions, salary, and freelance
Multi-currency support — entries in different currencies roll up into a single estimated total
Set a payment day per entry, so recurring rent and subscriptions show exactly when they're due

How to Start Budgeting

Open Monthly Budget

Click 'Monthly Budget' in the sidebar to see your recurring monthly income and expenses, with your monthly balance at a glance.

2

Add an income or expense

The page automatically totals your monthly income, expenses, and balance, and sorts expenses largest-first so your biggest costs stand out. Every entry is written to your own Google Sheets — your data stays in your hands.

What the Monthly Budget Tracks

Each budget entry includes a type (income or expense), category, amount, currency, payment day, and notes. Expense categories come with built-in options like rent/mortgage, utilities, transport, food, insurance, telecom, subscriptions, education, and medical; income categories include salary, freelance, investment returns, and bonuses — and you can always type your own. The top of the page live-totals your monthly income, expenses, and balance, while the expense list below is sorted largest-first so your biggest costs stand out. When entries span multiple currencies, the app converts them into a single estimated total using current exchange rates for easy comparison. Like every other WalletMap feature, these records live entirely in your own Google Sheets — our servers keep none of them.

Why budgeting and net worth belong in the same place

Most people manage money with two separate tools: a budgeting app for day-to-day spending, and a spreadsheet or another app to track savings, stocks, and crypto. The problem is that these are two sides of the same coin — roughly how much you can save each month (income minus spending) is what drives how fast your assets grow over time. Split the tools apart, and it's hard to see your monthly plan and your current assets together. WalletMap keeps the Monthly Budget and your assets in the same app and the same Google Sheets, so you can take in both sides in one place — they stay separate records, though; the budget doesn't automatically change your asset numbers.

The Monthly Budget is deliberately lightweight. It isn't about logging every cup of coffee — that level of detail is exactly what makes most people quit budgeting within two weeks. It's better suited to the fixed or semi-fixed monthly flows: salary, rent, subscriptions, insurance, utilities. These are large and predictable, and once you have them recorded, you can see roughly how much you're saving each month — far more useful than tracking scattered small purchases. You can log everything if you want, but the tool never forces you to.

Multi-currency is a sore spot for many budgeting apps, yet it's a must-have for anyone moving between markets. In WalletMap's Monthly Budget, every entry carries its own currency — no forced conversion up front. When you want an overview, the app converts everything into a single estimated total using current exchange rates. It's the same rate logic that powers WalletMap's multi-currency asset tracking, so your budget and your assets speak the same currency language.

The most important part is still privacy. Budget data is genuinely sensitive — your salary, your rent, whether you're paying off a loan — all of it is legible from a single income-and-expense sheet. That's exactly why the Monthly Budget, like every other WalletMap feature, stores its records in your own Google Sheets, with nothing kept on our backend. You can open that sheet and read the raw data anytime, or revoke our access — control of your data stays with you from start to finish.

FAQ on the Monthly Budget

Are budgeting and asset tracking separate?
They're two features, deliberately kept in the same app. Asset tracking shows what you have right now (the current total of your savings, stocks, and crypto); the Monthly Budget shows your recurring monthly income and expenses — a plan of what a typical month looks like. Both live in WalletMap, and both store data in your Google Sheets — so you can see 'how much do I have' and 'roughly how much can I save each month' in the same place. They stay separate records, though: the budget doesn't change your asset numbers.
Do I have to log every single transaction?
No. The Monthly Budget works best for fixed or semi-fixed monthly flows — salary, rent, subscriptions, insurance, utilities. Record those clearly and you can estimate how much you're saving each month. You can log every coffee if you like, but the tool won't force you; keeping it sustainable matters more.
How are entries in different currencies handled?
Each entry carries its own currency, so there's no need to convert when you record it. For a monthly overview, the app converts everything into a single estimated total using current exchange rates. If a rate is temporarily unavailable, it tells you rather than showing a wrong number.
Where is my budget data stored? Is it safe?
Like all WalletMap data, it lives entirely in your own Google Sheets — our servers keep none of it. Budget data is genuinely sensitive (salary and rent are obvious at a glance), so our principle is simply not to touch it. You can open that sheet to read the raw records anytime, or revoke our access in your Google account settings.
